I took Sociology 1010 here at UVa and despite not ever attending class I actually read the books and passed the course. One book that I found particularly interesting was “Elsewhere, USA” by Dalton Conley. There was a chapter that discussed how we not physically a part of groups in society, that they are more abstract. The best example I can give is like being a part of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge group of people because you participated but that isn’t a real, physical group to join. Today, we live in Elsewhere, USA. Elsewhere is kind of like a place where we are always thinking and operating and living in. A place not here, not now. This influences how we build our identities and our relationships with others. There comes a point where we have a moment of realization that we aren’t doing things that we want to be doing. That we’re doing things like look good or are “good”. We have shallow reasons for doing a lot of things too. Ever ask someone why over and over again until they just cave and say “I don’t know?!” Yeah you might’ve struck a cord but if they truly knew why they wouldn’t give up on their why.
Types of why:
***I also suggest reading Simon Sinek's book "Start with Why"
